Joy Askew
Music can change your mood almost instantaneously. Musics evocative nature can make you cry - accessing a memory, relax with a groove or feel terror. It can draw you into an immediate focus- the complete detail of the past for instance, where you heard a specific song before but also can open up your horizon, when you may have been too focused on something close at hand and help you see a bigger picture! I know paintings, photos, dance, poetry etc. can make these changes too….but the thing I love about music most of all is being able to create such magic and influence with other people - like birds moving together. I have never lost the love I felt when I first heard Miles Davis' first electric band with Tony Williams and Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Wayne Shorter…….they changed the dimensions of sound and did it all together…from the drums out!
